A big question we ask at Turtle Tank is:

What is, in fact, the purpose of ‘work’?

Our concept of ‘work’ is so deeply rooted in capitalism and production that we almost never stop to question the radical purpose of ‘work’. If we’re not producing something - an object, a desired outcome, a result -- then we feel like we’re not working. And when we are not working, we feel (and often are made to be) worthless and valueless in a capitalist frame.

Is that really the purpose of ‘work’ though? To produce?

By definition, the origin of the word “work” is associated with ‘doing’ or something being done.

In a capitalist frame: Work = to do = to produce

Most of us, consciously or subconsciously, associate the idea of working with producing. And anything that does not look like producing feels like a failure. Even the most radical of us live with that feeling and have to detox from it constantly… yes, don’t lie to yourself now, we’re all trying.

And though, in the name of justice, we spend the majority of our time talking about resources and their redistribution, we often ignore how we spend the most precious resources we have: our time, our energy, our consciousness, our attention. Most of which are consumed by “working”. And we forget how deeply drained these precious resources are by design -- a cornerstone of capitalist economics.

What kind of people, communities and world does that draining create? People who lack presence and connection to power. People who are not able to efficiently and effectively evolve us out of the systemic bullshit that is killing us and into worlds of radical love and freedom.

So why do we continue to participate in a way of working that drains us, burns us out, destroys us and even leads to disease or early death?

There are a million reasons that all boil down to: survival.

No matter how radical our work is, our sense of survival is mainly running the show.

Whether it’s income, prestige (for ego and more income), greed, change, justice -- we are mostly operating out of survival. Simply fighting for our right to be and our access to basic resources like food, healthcare and housing. We work tirelessly for the bare minimum that life has to offer with few moments of rest and joy. Trying to create the conditions within which we can survive better. But we are still just surviving.

Right now, we work to survive.

Work = Survival

At Turtle Tank, we’re tired of survival. While we honor the ancestors, and our families who have fought to survive: survival is no longer enough.

For us, Ije and Samia, survival stopped being a good enough reason to be alive.

Which brings us to another big question we ask at Turtle Tank:

Why are we actually alive and what does that have to do with ‘work’?

We, Ije and Samia started Turtle Tank after years of struggling with staying alive (talk about survival). Yes, we are talking about feeling the need to end one’s life, to leave this earth under the great pressure of survival. Struggling to wake up out of bed in the morning and fully commit to living a full life.

There was no amount of ‘radical work’ for freedom, justice or liberation that could appease our pain. The fight for freedom also stopped being a good enough reason to be alive, eventually.

And we know we are not alone. Many radical creators, activists, artists, healers, entrepreneurs struggle with this feeling on a consistent basis. Much more than we all like to admit publicly.

We realized that our lives were marked by relentless and endless struggle. That we were working for a future we may never see, yet we did not feel alive and fulfilled in our everyday journey.

For a lifetime we each sat with the question: why am I here?

What is the point of all the struggle and challenge if all we wake up to the next day is more struggle and more challenge?

What keeps us alive and why would we want to stay alive?

We spent our lives looking for our reason to be alive and what it takes to stay anchored here by it.

That seeking sent us into deep healing work through a number of avenues rooted in indigenous and afro-indgenous systems-- healing that would integrate us back into ourselves so we could see who we are and why we are here.

In that work, we realized that we, as humans, are all in fact here to heal, to fulfill our deepest desires, to express our greatest potential and evolve into ever greater love and freedom. We are here to heal back into lives and worlds of joy. Of sweetness. Of wonder. Of magic.

All of the things that make the struggles and challenges worth enduring.

And when we separate our ‘work’ from that pursuit of healing into joy, sweetness, wonder and magic -- our lives lose their meaning, and we lose our creative self. And most importantly, we lose are true reason for being. For wanting to be alive.

Let’s face it… if there’s nothing sweet in it for us, then how will we keep our internal fire going? Why would we?

Simply put: when we separate our personal+collective healing journey & process from our work journey, our lives become meaningless.

Our work IS to heal into lives of joy, sweetness, wonder and magic. To evolve into more of our humanity. To become ever more human, express our creative power and experience our lives to the fullest.

At Turtle Tank: Work = Healing into lives of joy, sweetness, wonder and magic

And that… is the most radical thing we can do. Not dream of those lives or fight for them but ACTUALLY LIVE THEM.

We move away from ‘work’ as doing and move into work as ACTIVE BEING. Being the love and freedom we are seeking.

We are no longer fighting for love, we are striving to LIVE in LOVE - and be in love with our work and life journeys. That kind of being in love is radical. It is subversive. It is creative. It is mysterious and emerging. It is unpredictable. It is sexy. It is magnetic. It is powerful and unwavering. That kind of love evolves us and inspires the evolution of all.

At Turtle Tank, we want to be in love - always and forever - with our work and lives. Not what we produce but who we are, how we live and love daily.

Which brings us to one final question: how do we ensure that our work = healing into lives of joy, sweetness, wonder and magic?

At Turtle Tank, we believe that the process of healing is where the deepest, most meaningful and impactful creations come from. When we integrate neglected or abandoned parts of ourselves, the alchemy of that moment of integration is what propels the emergence of unimaginable creations! In our integration, in our healing, we become vessels for solutions that bring forth worlds of love and freedom.

In fact for us, there is no distinction between work, creating and healing.

In a capitalist frame: Work = Producing

(And when we are not “producing” we are shamed, discarded, invisibilized, marginalized, valueless and worthless.)

In a Turtle Tank frame: Work = Healing = Creation = Evolution

(And everybody is doing work on some level that involves healing, creating and evolving themselves and the collective - everybody has a unique purpose and is sacred to the whole outside of the realm of production.)

If our work process - not simply the outcome but the ritual of working-- isn’t healing us, inspiring us, driving us, bringing us alive, feeding our deepest desires and propelling us to evolve into being ever more human, then what is our work actually about?

What happens when we approach our lives and particularly our work as sacred healing ritual - for ourselves first and foremost and by extension with others?

Yes, all of our work.

Cutting hair is sacred healing ritual

Cleaning home is sacred healing ritual

Caring for someone is sacred healing ritual

Strategy is sacred healing ritual

Community Organizing is sacred healing ritual

Architecture is sacred healing ritual

Art-making is sacred healing ritual

Programming is sacred healing ritual

Teaching is sacred healing ritual

Raising children is sacred healing ritual

Developing meaningful relationships is sacred healing ritual

When we see our work process as Sacred Healing Ritual towards joy, sweetness, wonder and magic… we bring meaning back to our lives, we heal ourselves and by extension we heal our diseased systems. And through the alchemy of healing, we co-create worlds of radical love and freedom.

When we say our work is life or death, we mean it (for us at least to start).

We spent our lives exploring two themes that shape our work and frameworks:

ONE: RADICAL PURPOSE: Our good reason for being here, our purpose for being alive

TWO: LIFE AND WORK AS SACRED HEALING RITUAL: A way of being (living and working) rooted in healing as the alchemy of creation towards more joy, sweetness, wonder and magic.

We’ve created frameworks that assists us in designing a work and creative process as sacred healing ritual -- so that the ritual of working itself heals us and brings forth creations that will alter the DNA of our diseased systems back into sacred wholeness.

Why (The School for) Radical Purpose?

We are each here to evolve through a journey of fulfilling and expressing our Radical Purpose. Radical Purpose is the lens through which we experience our evolutionary process.

From examining our Radical Purpose, we learn who we are, why we are here, how we work, what our gifts and wounds are, how we heal them and what we’re made of (when the sh** hits the fan). Our journey through Radical Purpose drives us to know ourselves and our potential and with that knowing, learn how to co-create our world anew.

Radical Purpose reminds us of our unique, sacred power and value on this earth. It is what instinctually and inherently drives us to survive, thrive, evolve and contribute to the collective. It is our core guiding force on the evolutionary journey.

At Turtle Tank, we say that Radical Purpose is our unique, individual, internal compass that directs each of us through effectively navigating our personal journey of transformation and evolution towards our fullest collective potential.

And when we each root in our unique Radical Purposes, we create a movement of transformation that honors the sovereign evolutionary process of each individual. And that honoring contributes to a collective evolutionary process guided by radical love and freedom. We create the conditions for the emergence of a world that no single culture, group, system or human being could have imagined alone.

Each individual’s unique purpose is the community’s source of value, power, well-being and wealth. We define Freedom as the ability of each person to know and fulfill their unique purpose on this earth. We define Love as the fullest expression of our purpose.

Through Radical Purpose, we are driven and guided by the mysterious creative force of the universe into worlds of radical love and freedom.

TURTLE TESTIMONIALS

HOW WE WORK / WHAT WE TEACH

We, Ije and Samia, the co-founders of Turtle Tank are on our own journeys of healing, self-discovery and evolution. Our work is to learn the graceful dance with the mystery (aka the universe), to understand the process of creation and our responsibility and power in it. We investigate the most effective ways to co-create purposeful, fulfilling and impactful lives for all towards collective balance, well-being and wealth.

From that personal work, we’ve created a community of Sovereign Learners to teach and learn with.

We are not a conventional mystery school, nor do we belong to a specific lineage as a school though some of us are initiated in our respective foundational cosmosystems. We bring a diversity of lineages together, in conversation, towards our collective human evolution. We are still (and always will be) students on the journey of life with our dear mentors and teachers.

We teach our own wholistic, nature-based frameworks inspired by our personal creative, healing and transformational journeys. Our work is rooted in metaphysics, somatics, human development, consciousness evolution techniques, ecology and natural systems, radical entrepreneurship and economics, afro-indigenous and other indigenous cosmosystems and radical, queer people of color creative & artistic processes.

We are also in the process of bringing our own mentors and teachers to the Tank to create and share their transformational and evolutionary teachings. Right now, we are preparing our community of Sovereign Learners and our infrastructural space for those teachers. What we teach at this time is foundational for all that is to come.

As a community, we practice (re)aligning with our unique Radical Purpose, designing our work and life as Sacred Ritual and creating lives, relationships, projects, enterprises and communities of collective wealth and well-being.
