At Turtle Tank we believe that our leaders can access much more power, love and joy AND have much greater and lasting impact by becoming intentional, conscious and trained RITUALISTS invested in our personal & collective evolution into worlds of love and freedom.

Why? Ritual as building block of any system.

We define ritual as: an infrastructure within which we are rebirthed towards or realigned with a specific purpose.

In fact, we believe that all systems emerge out of ritual practices. Ritual practices are the building blocks that create, recreate and maintain a system. Rituals repeated engrave a system in place.

So in order to create healthy, equitable and sustainable systems, we must investigate the rituals that birth and rebirth them.

Our leaders need to understand the art and science of sacred healing ritual to effectively assist us in our collective evolution towards worlds of ever greater love and freedom.

How? (re)sacralizing the practice of Radical Leadership.

We are (re)sacralizing the practice of Radical Leadership: bringing the sacred back to the way we lead.

Most leadership programs teach approaches to leading, a way of leading (servant-leadership, transformative leadership, facilitative leadership etc.) and tools for leading (facilitative practices, collective decision-making techniques etc.)

Although beneficial, these kinds of programs are centered in “ways of doing” that may or may not effectively apply to all situations at hand and for all leaders and their unique make-up.

At Turtle Tank we are centered in “ways of being”: the sacred healing ritual practice of coming back to ourselves, our human-ness (and the collective consciousness) as the source of holistic wisdom that propels us on our evolutionary journey.

We define Sacred as: of which the soul value is emphasized, recognized and expressed

When we, as Radical Leaders learn ritual practices that root us in our soul value and the soul value of natural forces, we access our truest, most human selves -- an evolved consciousness. From this place of consciousness, we witness the emergence of the most effective leadership strategies in any situation or environment.

What does that look like? Frameworks rooted in purpose and natural law.

We don’t teach systems or approaches… we go to the root and the soul.

We teach frameworks (basic “DNA” structures underlying a systems) that are rooted in the art/science of ritual:

One: a framework that reconnects us with ourselves (our unique purpose and power) so we can access deeper consciousness and gain holistic insights for next steps, big decisions, strategies etc.

Two: a framework that reconnects us with natural law (the natural forces that create and re-create the world) so we can tap into the universe’s evolutionary wisdom to bring forth healing and evolving.

Through Sacred Radical Leadership, we as Radical Leaders can develop our own responsive, ever-emerging style of leading that is rooted in both a) our unique purpose (why we are here) and b) our understanding of and engagement with the natural forces of healing, creation and evolution that are at our fingertips.

Over the years, I (Samia) have struggled to embrace my humanity in leadership.

I have struggled to honor my personal rhythm, the way that I’m designed to work best despite what anyone else needed. I have struggled to make mistakes because no mistake felt affordable to either myself or my community. I have struggled to put my desires at the center of my work. I have struggled with boundaries and been drained to the ground. I have invested in other people’s lives and well-being ahead of mine. I have struggled to set reasonable expectations of myself and from others.

I have struggled to be human.

In our experience working with leaders (and as leaders ourselves), particularly marginalized leaders of color, we’ve found that our greatest challenges stem from one root cause: not being able to embody and express our fullest humanity under the unpredictable and tremendous pressures of the creation process, under the weight of our responsibility to others.

When we, as leaders, learn to embrace our full humanity under any condition we co-create the most effective, impactful, desire-driven and long-lasting projects and communities.

How do we, at Turtle Tank, embrace our full humanity? We do so through a practice of Sacred Radical Leadership.

Sacred Radical Leadership:

A leadership practice that grows our ability to embrace our fullest humanity by engaging with our leadership journey as a process of initiation, healing and evolution into ever more love and freedom for both ourselves and the collective.

Samia’s story: losing my humanity and my shift towards Sacred Radical Leadership

When I was under pressure, all of my personal patterns were put under a magnifying glass.

Over-giving, not setting proper boundaries, putting duty over desire, putting others’ well-being ahead of my own. All of these stemmed from old core wounds around belonging, worth and value that I was already trying to address through my personal healing work. Of course, they were going to come up in and through any creation or endeavor I was engaged in. That was expected, as I’ve come to understand more about how the creation process works...

Over the years, I have given too much.

As my work started evolving and growing, I was getting increasingly more angry with people’s unrealistic expectations of me. The more I gave, the less people appreciated what and how much I was giving. No matter how much I gave, people would express dissatisfaction -- even as they were learning and their lives were radically changing for the better, even as they were actually satisfied for the most part. I was unhappy with how I was being treated and growing bitter at the site of all the invisible work I was doing that nobody could fathom or understand.

I took too much responsibility for people’s processes and outcomes, their work, their mistakes.

I wanted to ensure that everyone (be it my team or my community) had as much support as possible to be who they came here to be. And the way I went about that compromised my time and energy and completely drained the joy and love from my work.

There were so many places where I had erased myself, my desire… the me that wanted to do things that I’m absolutely in love with.

There were parts of me, particularly my creative self, that took a back seat to all of the other more ‘important’ and ‘time-sensitive’ work that it takes to maintain an enterprise and a community. And even though I’ve been fairly aware of my purpose in the work and world for a while now, I kept going through ever deeper layers of realizing how much I was still holding back on it. How I was not fully living into my Radical Purpose, my reason for being here. And how that had impacted my ability to express my fullest potential and to create ever more loving and freeing work.

As I sat with my feelings and self-reflections, I started to realize that I was actually angry at myself mostly.

I was angry at my inability to set clear expectations that honored my humanity. I was angry at myself for not honoring my deepest desire. I was angry at myself for not putting what I love front and center. In fact, I was responsible for creating an environment where what I was doing was not what I wanted to do. Where people felt they could treat me as non-human, where they could forget my humanity and my purpose. Where people felt excessively entitled to my time and energy, far beyond reasonable bounds because I didn’t set bounds. I had set unreasonable expectations of myself, mostly to prove my worth and value, my deserving to belong.

Something had to change or I was going to disappear myself completely and off this earth. I had to regain my humanity in leadership.

This story is not uncommon for most leaders, especially marginalized leaders of color.

The truth is, being a leader (especially a queer person of color) under the pressures of both the creation process and systemic abuse is extremely, extremely challenging and deeply trying.

But what I’ve learned is this: when I engage with my journey of leadership as an initiatory, healing journey towards evolutionary transformation (for myself first), my work can move into unimaginable realms of desire, creativity, possibility and power.

This approach of centering my healing and self-expression has changed the entire way I work, create and lead. It has given me back my life, my love, my community and is bringing in more abundance than I could have imagined before.

At Turtle Tank, we believe that what we’re actually signing up for as leaders is the challenging journey of becoming more human, and by extension supporting others in doing so. And becoming more human means healing, evolving and learning to love our whole selves while we do our transformational work, no matter the waves of intimate and public pressure. In fact, we believe that our works (our projects and creation processes) are initiation rituals towards our evolutionary transformation - if we choose to set them up as such. And we believe that the approach of thinking of our journey of leadership as an initiation in and of itself is where our greatest, juiciest, most creative and powerful work comes from.

We call this journey and practice: Sacred Radical Leadership.

Sacred Radical Leadership:

A leadership practice that grows our ability to embrace our fullest humanity by engaging with our leadership journey as a process of initiation, healing and evolution into ever more love and freedom for both ourselves and the collective.

HOW WE WORK / WHAT WE TEACH

We, Ije and Samia, the co-founders of Turtle Tank are on our own journeys of healing, self-discovery and evolution. Our work is to learn the graceful dance with the mystery (aka the universe), to understand the process of creation and our responsibility and power in it. We investigate the most effective ways to co-create purposeful, fulfilling and impactful lives for all towards collective balance, well-being and wealth.

From that personal work, we’ve created a community of Sovereign Learners to teach and learn with.

We are not a conventional mystery school, nor do we belong to a specific lineage as a school though some of us are initiated in our respective foundational cosmosystems. We bring a diversity of lineages together, in conversation, towards our collective human evolution. We are still (and always will be) students on the journey of life with our dear mentors and teachers.

We teach our own wholistic, nature-based frameworks inspired by our personal creative, healing and transformational journeys. Our work is rooted in metaphysics, somatics, human development, consciousness evolution techniques, ecology and natural systems, radical entrepreneurship and economics, afro-indigenous and other indigenous cosmosystems and radical, queer people of color creative & artistic processes.

We are also in the process of bringing our own mentors and teachers to the Tank to create and share their transformational and evolutionary teachings. Right now, we are preparing our community of Sovereign Learners and our infrastructural space for those teachers. What we teach at this time is foundational for all that is to come.

As a community, we practice (re)aligning with our unique Radical Purpose, designing our work and life as Sacred Ritual and creating lives, relationships, projects, enterprises and communities of collective wealth and well-being.
